This powder room upgrade inspires me every day whenever I step into the room or open the door. The colors and lights in the room are welcoming at any time of the day. Still, a few updated are pending, like the wall shelves and the towel holder. For the towel bar, I was inspired by a beautiful mess blog for an acrylic rod towel bar, with well written DIY information. Will be updated when they are done.
We have a very small powder room in my townhouse. I wanted to upgrade the builder grade room to the next level. Wanted to keep the budget to less than $500 and still achieve a high-quality product. I am very comfortable to do things with wood. Wainscoating the bottom part of walls was on my mind. After going through many Pinterest ideas, I decided to include some drama into the room design. A wall with 2 colors. These were a few of my Pinterest inspirations from here and here.
Since the room is so small, I could not get all the room in one picture. View of different walls below. After upgrade picture on the left side and before transformation on right.
The mirror wall after and before the upgrade. I forgot to take the picture before starting a little work. The bottom wall was already painted, Chantilly Lace.
Trim Preparation
Started off by taking measurements for wainscoting. The height of the chair rail is set at 52 inches. Here are the links for chair rail moulding and trim moulding used for the project are attached. The trim moulding boxes are 28 in L x 18 in H. Honestly you can use any length and width. Be sure to have at least 5 inches space between chair rail and trim. I did maintain 5 inches away from wall and baseboard. I used a miter saw to cut them at 45-degree cuts.
Paint them before cutting them into pieces, will save a lot of time later. Wood glue from home depot helps to stick to the wall. I used brad nails to hold them tight. Use of a level tool is very hand.
Putting it all together
I painted the ceiling and finished my crown moulding, to begin with. Crown moulding for the ceiling is explained in detail in another blog post.
After ceiling and crown mounding was complete, I painted the Iron Mountain color on upper walls. Then painted Chantilly lace in egg-shell on the lower wall. Trim install was easy once you have all the cut pieces.
Caulking was needed around all the trim work. This helped eliminate all the small irregularities. Once all the woodwork and painting is complete, it’s time to put in some accessories.

The picture frame on the wall is from the Target. It’s very easy to put it on the wall.

Removed old oval mirror and updated mirror from Target – Round brass finish mirror. Existing light fixture was not replaced for now. It looks ok for now, will update soon.

The wall color is Benjamin Moore(BM) Iron Mountain in eggshell. The bottom wall color is Benjamin Moore(BM) Chantilly Lace in eggshell. The trim is the same color but in a semi-gloss sheen. The transformation of color from flooring to Chantilly lace wall and Iron Mountain upper wall. Finally finished with crown mounding painted with Chantilly lace and the ceiling painted with Chantilly Lace but in a flat sheen.
Lastly, I had to paint the door to match the paint on the inside of the room. So painted the door in Chantilly lace semi-gloss.
Let me know in comments what you guys think.
